The U S Navy provided housing for military families in a group of homes on West Kingston Road. Kitsap County purchased the site in 2007, and the homes were demolished. More than 150 volunteers, led by Rick Lanning and Dave Wetter built the Village Green Park.
An early resident planted this Camperdown Elm around 1905, but plat maps make it difficult to determine who owned the land at the time. Jack Minert stands in front of the tree, which his mother, Maxine, saved when she persuaded crews to spare the tree during the construction of the Kingston sewer treatment plant. The tree still stands on the Village Green campus.
